Although our hearts are ready to leave for Kenya tomorrow there is still much to be done here. We will be leaving for Mombasa, Kenya in June to work with the homeless youth there. We are partnering with an already established home for teens called Rapha House. As it is at the moment, Rapha House can mostly only service boys. We feel God calling us to work with young girls who are also very much in need of care. They endure severe brokenness. Most have suffered from rape, abuse, hunger, drugs and abandonment. It was very difficult for us to witness this firsthand and yet know that places for them were limited, non-existent or they were just too hopeless to engage. Last year alone 2 of the young girls we became friends with while in Mombasa died. Ava was 14 and her and her newborn baby died while in labor. Maria was 18 and died while in her wheelchair where she was left in a ditch during heavy rain.
Many of these girls have no hope. They feel that they are worth absolutely nothing. But we know that our God is a God who redeems and brings hope where there is no hope. These girls need extensive and focused love and care. Rapha house would like to reach out to all children in need. Our calling is to join efforts with Rapha House and share the gifts God has blessed us with. We want to love them so much that they understand they are treasured and that God has a future for them.The first step to the long term vision  is to open a coffee shop. The coffee shop will be a safe haven where the youth can get together without judgment and explore their gifts and talents. In this very special place, each young person can explore and learn different skills, both artistic and practical, while working towards employment. The goal is for the coffee house to be run and operated cooperatively by the girls we are training. (see link at bottom of page).
